Hanford 309 Dome Removal

Hanford, Washington
Client: Barnhart Crane & Rigging

Structural analysis for removal of a 67 ton, 80 foot diameter steel-plated dome at the 309 Building Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor. The greatest challenge was to control warping of the ¼ inch thin steel shell during lifting. A computer model was used to predict behavior of the steel dome and to design custom reinforcing along the dome’s vulnerable cutline.
